Only a few of the original looms remain operational in the world today. Stocking mills are huge machines - some are up to 60 feet long and 12 tons in weight. These machines with more than 15,000 needles each need constant attention and it takes hours to produce only 30 stocking legs. It is no wonder why they are so expensive. Today there are only a few companies still manufacturing fully fashioned stockings using either the genuine 1950's machinery, or replicas of it. For purely economic reasons, some of the well known manufacturers stopped manufacturing fully fashioned stockings. But don't worry. If you are not able to locate a source of the original nylons, then you are still lucky. Because of the rising demand quite a few companies manufacture a modern variety of 100% fully fashioned nylons in the traditional way.

Stockings are usually manufactured white and are later tinted in different colors. Each stocking will be pulled over a flat leg shaped board made of metal or wood and then steamed. The seam not only ennobles the stocking but is an integral part. Without the seam they would simply fall apart. This process tightens the knit, defines the leg shape and removes any creases. Each stocking will be checked for size to ensure pairs match and also for defects. Manufacturers sold various grades of stockings and it is not unusual to see examples of marketed brands of 'imperfections' in the vintage nylon market.

The 'key hole' (loop) is formed as a by product of the finishing process. The seam is finished by turning the welt (stocking top) over in a circle. By the key hole together with the seam you can identify a true fully-fashioned nylon stocking.
